Proposals for railway suicide prevention in Canada
This section provides access to three potentially effective interventions to reduce the number of railway suicides in the Canadian context. These proposals are based on the best existing practices in suicide prevention and an analysis of the Canadian railway context.
An implementation and evaluation plan has also been included for each proposal, along with feasibility and cost analyses. These proposals are:
- Telephones and signs along at-risk areas of tracks
- Signage promoting help seeking along at-risk areas of tracks including evaluation of the implementation and effectiveness
- Education in mental health facilities near tracks
Several areas of track have been identified where these prevention measures could be pilot tested to assess their ability to be implemented as well as their impact in preventing suicides. If you would like to discuss detailed information on these areas of track, please contact the research team.
